Pranab Mukherjee sworn in as the 13th President of India
Former Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today sworn in as the 13th President of India. When the inauguration, the 76-year-old man was called for action to address the severe poverty in India.
Presidency in India merely ceremonial role. However, in his inauguration speech, Mukherjee urged the Indians to prioritize the hundreds of millions of poor people who have been left behind by the recent economic growth.
In this inauguration ceremony, Mukherjee gave a speech in front of MPs and talk about poverty alleviation.
"In order for us to be real development, which is the poorest in the country we should feel that they are part of the Indian native who was on the rise," Mukherjee said as quoted by AFP on Wednesday (07/25/2012).
"No insult heavier than hunger ... We have raised them under," he added.
In his speech, Mukherjee also touched on corruption. "We can not let our progress hijacked by corruption," he said.
Mukherjee, the Congress party candidate elected president on Sunday, July 22 and after winning 69 percent of the vote among the members of the national parliament and state.
According to the constitution of India, the prime minister holds executive power in India. But the president can send back a bill for reconsideration and play an important role in the process of government formation.
